Making an appointment

Occupational therapist helping a man walk up the stairs To see an occupational therapist, you must refer yourself or be referred by a doctor, family member, housing organisation or other healthcare professional.
Once the referral has been received, we can arrange an appointment for you.

All referrals should be made to the Central Referral Service, which is operated by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

You can contact the Central Referral Service by calling 084 5606 6596.

It is open at the following times:
  • Monday to Thursday - 8.30am to 5pm
  • Friday - 8.30am to 4.30pm.

About your appointment

Appointments with an occupational therapist usually last around 30 to 45 minutes.

The therapist will carry out an assessment to measure the nature of your condition.

This includes discussing your daily routine and observing you as you complete simple tasks, such as climbing stairs, getting in and out of bed or walking around.

The therapist will then discuss their findings with you and agree what treatment is needed.

Options may include:
  • a rehabilitation programme to help you regain a specific ability
  • learning a new way of doing an activity
  • recommending adaptations to your home.
An interpreter service is available for appointments - please let us know in advance if you need to use it.
