Advice for Northern Ireland Housing Executive tenants

Occupational therapist helping a man prepare dinner If you are a Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) tenant, there are many adaptations you can request for your home which do not need a recommendation from an occupational therapist.

These include:
  • installing a handrail at the front or rear of your home or in communal pathways
  • providing a whirly clothes line or a path to your clothes line
  • widening garden paths for wheelchair users or people with walking aids
  • replacing or moving coal bunkers elsewhere
  • providing outdoor lighting for disabled people with visual or mobility difficulties
  • providing paved areas for wheelchairs
  • installing an additional continuous handrail on staircases (or other parts of your home if required)
  • changing door knobs to lever handles
  • lowering Yale locks
  • moving sockets or switches to a more convenient level
  • providing Rocker light switches.
You should contact your district maintenance officer for more information or to request a home adaptation.
