Community Nutrition and Dietetic Service

Dieticians examine a sample of different foods
Dieticians from the Community Nutrition and Dietetic Service provide impartial nutritional advice to individuals, families, children, older people and community groups.

They work with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, speech and language therapists, dentists, social workers and health promotion staff, to:
  • improve health and wellbeing
  • promote awareness of the link between nutrition, health and wellbeing
  • prevent and treat nutrition-related diseases.
Our community dieticians can offer you advice about your diet, either at your
local doctor’s surgery or health centre or, if necessary, in your own home.

They provide specialist services in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, learning disabilities, paediatrics and palliative care.

They can also offer guidance on a range of nutritional issues, such as:

  • diabetes
  • weight problems
  • bowel disorders
  • heart conditions
  • cancer
  • kidney disease
  • child and adolescent health
  • liver disease
  • eating disorders, for example, anorexia nervosa
  • problems with swallowing
  • poor appetite
  • tube feeding
  • women’s health
  • pregnancy.
