Community Midwives

A pregnant woman examines an ultrasound photograph Our team of community midwives, based in Grove Wellbeing Centre, provides antenatal, intra-natal and post-natal care to women and their families living in north Belfast.

They are specialists in providing maternity care where there are no complications and they work together with local GPs and other health and social care professionals.

Their role includes:
  • providing antenatal care in local doctors’ surgeries or via home visits
  • attending women in labour in hospital or who are giving birth at home
  • visiting new mums and babies in their homes for up to 28 days after a birth
  • providing antenatal education and infant massage, for example, via Surestart programmes
  • providing reflexology therapy
  • running local breastfeeding support groups.
The team also provides advice to women and their partners throughout their pregnancy, birth and post-natal period.

They give support to new mums and babies about parenthood and baby feeding and have close links with health visitors, who fulfill a similar role after birth.

Our community midwives are linked to the following hospitals:
  • Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital
  • Mater Maternity Hospital.
