Frequently asked questions
I think I have post-natal depression. What help is available for me?
Post-natal depression affects around ten to 15 per cent of mothers.
It usually develops within the first month following childbirth and up to a year afterwards.
Symptoms range from mild `baby blues` to severe depression or post-natal psychosis.
The causes of post-natal depression are unclear but hormonal changes following childbirth, disrupted sleep patterns and the stress of looking after a new baby are all key factors.
If you are suffering with post-natal depression, talking to someone, such as your health visitor, is often the first step.
A health visitor is available in the health centre in Grove Wellbeing Centre on Wednesdays from 2pm to 3.30pm.
