Choosing Our Own Leisure (C.O.O.L) Group

The C.O.O.L Group is aimed at children with development co-ordination disorder (DCD) or associated difficulties.

DCD, also known as development dyspraxia, describes the difficulty in getting your body to do what you want it to do, when you want it to do it.

It can cause significant difficulties with movement and co-ordination. This can affect a child’s ability to perform daily activities to a degree which is not expected of their age and level of intelligence.

Children with DCD often recognise their differences compared to other children and avoid many activities, such as sports and PE, as a result.

About the C.O.O.L Group

The C.O.O.L Group was founded by parents whose children have been diagnosed with DCD.

The group has three aims:
  • to offer leisure choices for children and young people with DCD and other related conditions
  • to help children and young people improve their self-esteem, concentration, dexterity, balance and hand and eye co-ordination through leisure activities like fencing, archery and cycling
  • to give parents and carers a chance to meet up and talk.
